"Why Don't Vegans Eat Honey?"

This question comes up a lot when it comes to veganism, and it actually came up for me twice this week.  I figured that I would take this opportunity to write an entry to educate those who are curious.

So, why don't vegans eat honey?  The answer is quite simple.  It doesn't belong to us, it actually belongs to these guys...

You read that correctly:  Bees do not produce honey for humans, they produce honey for bees.  When honey is harvested by humans, they are stealing the bees food for their own consumption. Without their honey, they will starve to death.  So once again, humans are garbage because they are exploiting bees for their own benefit.

Two other questions that came up this week...

1.  What about the fact that local honey can help with allergies?

I can tell you that method of helping allergies is a bunch of nonsense.  It is a theory that the local honey that is sourced from your area will contain the pollen particles of the trees/flowers that are native to your surrounding area.  To be honest, you can never be sure of what is actually in the honey you consume.  Even if there were truth to this, it would take years and years of this type of immunotherapy to actually feel some relief.  You know how many bees you would kill in your lifetime?    Well, to help you figure it out, I will tell you that it takes 22,700 bees to make just ONE jar of honey.  You do the math.

2. What about ethically sourced honey?

There is no such thing. There is nothing ethical about animal exploitation.

So there you have it:  HONEY IS NOT VEGAN!!!   Take some advice from my mini-activist:

(the bees and the world will thank you)

**Here are a few alternatives for vegans (and everyone) when it comes to honey...

  • Agave Nectar
  • Coconut Nectar
  • Brown Rice Syrup
  • Maple Syrup

  1. And, even if it were ethical, it's vomit. Actually, it's vomit that has been passed from bee to bee, puked up, consumed, and puked up again. That doesn't sound appetizing to me.
